Our Church History
In June of 1868, Rev J. H. Stoney, pastor of the Nelson church, called eight men together for a meeting in the old red school house on Garrett Street. These nine men decided to form the Methodist Episcopal Church of Garrettsville. This red school house is still standing, right across the street from the present church on what is now called Park Avenue.
This small group continued to meet in the old red school house and held a very "splendid" revival service in the winter of 1872-73, after a regularly appointed preacher was received in 1872.
This preacher's name was Rev. John Brown, (no connection has ever been made to another man with that same name).
The present church building was constructed in 1874 at a cost of $8,000, and in 1892 a parsonage was built on a lot adjacent to the church. A bell was purchased from a foundry in Troy, N.Y. in 1893 and is still being rung every Sunday!
A 9- rank pipe organ was installed by the Hillgreen-Lane Co. in 1917, and though electrified and modernized since, is still being used today.*
